Day 07 (Thursday, 20 Nov2008)
We started our day to a visit to a boy school, the La Martiniere for boys. We were warmly welcomed by the principal of the school during their morning assembly, and we also got the opportunity to witness their rehearsal march for their sport day (something like that). I was thinking that it would be so cool if we also get to march in our college. Just being lame only!
We were brought to their AV room, when they have a mini presentation for us. One is about the environment and the other one was on currency. I was amazed by their knowledge in these areas, they were awesome. I heard from Kelvin that they were like the Raffles student in Kolkata, so called the elites and also the rich kids. They were way too fortunate than the others! Unfortunately, their classrooms and library were not that good. Some of the boys show us around the school, and I was feeling way too fortunate with what I have in college now. How could I complain about the school when the students in Kolkata do not even complain about theirs?
We then went for lunch first at this Chinese restaurant in Kolkata along with the presidents of the La Martiniere’s Interact club, both the girl’s and the boy’s schools. I really move the food there because I really missed Chinese cuisine a lot. I love the desert the best, it was so unique that I do not know how I should explain that. We then went for another community service project at the Little Sisters of the poor. It was a way much better place as compared to Shanti-dan. The air was much fresher and the place was much cleaner. I heard from them that this home takes in elderly whom their families cannot afford to provide for them, some abandon them there. I was really upset by this, and I told myself that I shall not let the history at Shanti-dan repeats. This time round, I plucked out my courage at talk to the elderly. We sang songs to the elderly; we talked to them; we help them to the chapel. There was a great satisfactory in me, I felt so happy when I saw a smile on their faces. It was the very first time I felt this way. Sadly, we have to leave that place and then we went somewhere else which I could no longer remember. I remember that we went to this local Bengali restaurant to try its local food. I would say that it was nice to try something new, something we do not get to try it at our home country.
Unfortunately, it was the last night we were spending in Kolkata because we were leaving for Singapore tomorrow. No! I do not want to go home yet! With our last night spent in Kolkata, we wanted to fully maximize our experience there. So as usual, we have a party at the ‘birdcage’ room. It was quite funny to know that 14 people rather squeezed in one penthouse, leaving the other few rooms empty. Our of our girls including me, along with all the boys except Clement stayed at the ‘birdcage’ room for the night. 9 of the girls including me squeezed ourselves into 2 double size beds. Some of them wanted to watch the sunrise before we left for home, but they woke up too early before the sun rose, so all of them went back to sleep. I was way too tired to watch the sunrise, but I was waked up when someone stepped on my legs. So, I went back to my room to sleep, together with Wendy.
