Day 03 (Sunday, 16 Nov 2008)
Our activity for this day was rather special. We went to this drawing competition organized by the Interactors from Chowringhee High School. This competition took place in the Southern part of Kolkata, in an isolated village. I was pretty excited for the village trip; this would be the first time going to a ‘real’ village with people still living in it. I do not get to see any village nowadays, other than the ‘Malay village’. I really admired our bus driver’s driving skills. I have no idea how he managed to get the whole coach through the narrow streets. The roads were way too narrow for a big coach like ours. Impressive!
As usual, we were late. But that was not the point. There were a lot of children and parents when we arrived at the village. Without any further delay, we started our work for the day. Honestly, I did not do much to help; I was interested in shooting photos then distributing drawing papers. In fact, I was taking photos most of the time. The children were separated into different categories according to their age, where they were given different topic to draw about. Fortunately I did not participate in this drawing competition, or I would be losing face like crazy. I mean these people could draw pretty well. With the limited drawing materials, they could simply do up a beautiful drawing. I was amazed by their talents! As we wait for all the participants to finish up their drawings, the principal of Chowringhee High School volunteered to bring us for a village tour. I was so excited about it!
I guessed I would never able to survive in places like that. The living conditions were worse than I imagined. No way am I staying at that kind of place. At the same time, I am grateful with what God has blessed me with, a nice home to live in. How fortunate I am as compared to them? It was totally an eyes opening experience for me, to see how it was like living in a village without any Internet or whatever communication devices. What a good get-away from a city life! After the tour, we then went back to the very same field, where we sat for the prize giving ceremony.
We were supposed to go for lunch after that; however, I have no idea why we were heading to another place instead. The coach went deeper into the village, where we reached this farm-like place. We walked all the way to a house which was like 1 km away deep into a farm. It was scorching bright, and I cannot believe we were walking! We attended this stupid meeting by a group of NGO, which I have no idea who they were. They did some stupid stunts which make no sense at all, and then we left. Anyway, we totally waste our time there. Meaningless to the maximum!
After lunch, A.D brought us for a city tour. A.D told me that we would be visiting the different temples in India, since Kolkata is a cultural filled city. Seriously, I no longer remember which temple I went exactly. No matter which temples we visited, no photographing is allowed. So, I have nothing to recall on. But I do remember visiting this Kaligat Kali Temple. We were totally ‘pancaked’ by the people there. It was way too crowded, filled with too many devotees. But the other temples we visited were a lot better, not as crowded.
I am so happy when Kelvin told us Wendy, Pohee and I was moving to the Penthouse at level 7. We were so thrilled about it, this mean that each one of use could have one double size bed to ourselves. Wow! It was awesome! Our previous room was way too small to accommodate another bed, so they suggest us to move up to a bigger room instead. Other than use, both Aloysius and Fiona group were also moving up there. I guess the most exciting part would be the moving process. We simply grabbed any bag and dumped all our stuff inside, especially our toiletries. We have too much stuff to move, so we got to trouble Joanne to help us.
